FYP Webinar-Information Literacy Skills & Reference Management Using Mendeley (22 Sept 2021)

The Final Year Project Unit (FYP), Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology, has invited the UMP Library for a session on reference management with the final year students' thesis writing on September 22, 2021. The briefing was held in two parts, the first at 10.00 a.m. and the second at 2.30 p.m. Approximately 120 students and lecturers attended the briefing session, which was held during the semester break via Microsoft Teams platform. The representative from the library presenting was Puan Affida Abu Bakar, Senior Librarian from the Education & Research Section.
Dr. Khairul Anuar Bin Shahid gave a welcome speech at the start of the first session. During this class on information literacy skills, participants learned about the types of reference materials they can utilise as their primary source of information on the topic of study. Participants can use electronic books, journal articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles, theses, and information from portals or blogs as reference material in addition to printed books. The participants were then explained how to use a search tool to find the information they needed. As students at UMP all participants can get materials in the library for free. The material in the library is the best material they can use as reference material. For the first session briefing, listed are the content shared:
1. Information Literacy Skills• Introduction to library searching platform (eFind, EzProxy, UMPIR, eColLib, e-Exam)
• Hands-on database searching (journal articles, etc.) - apply search techniques
• Thesis search
• Open access
• Basic citing, referencing & plagiarism tool
• Q&A
The afternoon session continued with a demonstration of how to use the Mendeley reference manager tool. In this session participants were prepared with reference material obtained from the first session. Each of these reference resources is utilised to conduct a hands-on session with the Mendeley Desktop. Participants were shown how to simply insert reference sources into Mendeley Desktop using a variety of approaches. They've also been taught how to handle all of the sources. Following that, they were shown how to use Microsoft Word's in inserting in-text citation and insert bibliography features. For the second session briefing, below is the content to share:
