Knowledge Sharing OSH Talk: Protection for All, The Importance of Safety and Healthy Lifestyles at Work - 17 Oct 2024

In an effort to increase awareness and practices of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), a knowledge sharing session entitled "OSH Talk: Protection for All - The Importance of Safety and a Healthy Lifestyle at Work" was held on 17 October 2024 (Thursday). The session was attended by various parties including employers, employees, and safety experts, with the aim of promoting a deep understanding of workplace safety protection as well as the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This sharing was delivered by the guest speaker, Puan Nurul Nadia Ummira Binti Abu Bakar, Assistant Director of the Pahang State Occupational Safety and Health Department (JKKP), who is an expert in the field of occupational safety and health. This session took place in the Pekan Library Executive Lounge and was broadcast live on UMPSA Library's Facebook page, allowing more campus residents to participate online.

This sharing session touched on various important aspects, including:

1. Fundamentals of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management - Protection for Workers

OSH is an important foundation in ensuring that workers are protected from any hazards in the workplace. This aspect of management involves strategies and procedures created to reduce risk and ensure employees are always in a safe and healthy environment.

2. Effects of Accidents in the Workplace

Accidents at work not only affect individuals but also the organization as a whole. Effects on workers include physical injury, psychological trauma, and in more serious cases, disability or death. From an organizational point of view, this accident can affect the productivity and image of an organization.

3. Accidental Losses

Losses resulting from accidents include medical costs, lost work time, and property damage. This results in a financial burden to the organization and can affect profitability. In addition, accidents can also reduce employees' confidence in workplace safety.

4. Losses to Employees and Society

Workers injured in accidents will face long-term effects that can disrupt their daily lives and cause stress to families and communities. Furthermore, the community also bears the burden in the form of treatment costs and social support.

5. Types of Hazards in the Workplace

This partnership also identifies various types of hazards that workers commonly face, including physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards. Understanding these types of hazards is important to manage risk more effectively.

6. Risk Control in the Workplace

Risk control measures are important in ensuring that hazards in the workplace are properly managed. This includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety awareness training, and changes to the work environment. Effective risk control can reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

 7. Emergency Action Plan

In order to overcome emergency situations, a clear and organized plan of action is needed. This includes the preparation of regular emergency drills, the provision of safety equipment, as well as specific instructions for employees when facing an emergency. This plan is important to ensure that all employees know what to do and can act quickly in the event of an incident.

This OSH Talk session is expected to bring awareness to all parties about the importance of safety and health in the workplace. With initiatives like this, employees and employers can work together to create a safer and healthier work environment for mutual well-being.
