UMPSA Library committed to pursue collective memory documentation via Oral History - 20th May 2025

Pekan, 20th May 2026 – Library Universiti Malaysia Al-Sultan Abdullah Library organized a workshop titled “Bengkel Pembangunan Sejarah Lisan: Mengabadikan Pengalaman dan Kisah” at Executive Lounge, UMPSA Library Pekan on 19th – 20th May 2026.

A total of 25 participant consist of academic and administrative staff from UMPSA, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UNIPSAS), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) dan National Archives of Malaysia also joined the 2 days’ workshop.

The workshop was delivered by Senior Lecturer, Senior Lecturer from Kolej Pengajian Perkomputeran, Informatik dan Matematik, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dr. Hanis Diyana binti Kamarudin.

Dr. Hanis introduced the concept and techniques of Oral History to the participants and simultaneously showed how to systematically collect, record and do an oral history data analysis in an ethical manner.

This activity creates awareness on the importance of documentation for the memory collective of personal experience for research and archive purposes.

During an interview simulation by the participants, the speaker assessed on the interview implementation methods of each group and assisted on the technique done and gave feedback to strengthen the participants' skills in conducting oral history interview sessions more effectively.

This workshop received very encouraging responses from the participants and they described the content of the program as beneficial and had a great impact in strengthening their knowledge and skills related to oral history.

According to Curator from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Setra Ginsim “This workshop was the best, very enthusiastic, and the speakers were very experienced.”

Deputy Chief Librarian from Perpustakaan Tuanku Bainun, Universiti Pergurusan Sultan Idris, Mohd. Razalli Ahmad Termizi says "This workshop is very good because the speakers have vast experience, having been involved in interviews with prominent figures in Malaysia and abroad."

In a nutshell, the workshop “Bengkel Pembangunan Sejarah Lisan: Mengabadikan Pengalaman dan Kisah’ successfully achieves the objective and proves the commitment of the UMPSA Library in supporting scholarly activities and preservation of a holistic knowledge heritage.
